Ten Things of Thankful: The Kitten Edition

Because I know you are DYING for an update, before I go any further with my 10 Things of Thankful post for this week, I want to let you know that I am no longer hearing "Wrecking Ball," "The Cup Song" OR "Royals" in my head on continuous play; I now have "Allison" by Elvis Costello stuck there. At least there has been an improvement in the quality of the song.

#10 on last week's list announced that we had a new member of our household. Here are my 10 Things of Thankful that I brought that baby girl home with me.

1. We are still arguing about her name. I have decided to call her Ruby. The rest of them can just live with it.

2. She cries for her mama when she's sleepy, and I have to hold her while she makes cookies and soothes herself until she falls asleep.

3. She keeps me from getting anything done around the house, like laundry and cooking and cleaning.

4. She is like a toddler on speed. Except she's potty trained already.

5. She thinks I'm her mama. Thankfully, not enough to try and nurse or anything, because she'd be in for a rude surprise there on so many levels. Just in a cuddly, snuggly, follow-me-all-over-the-house (or sleep on my laptop) kind of way.

6. The other two cats are s-l-o-w-l-y warming up to her learning to tolerate her. Fletcher started out by lurking in the same room with her and has progressed to touching noses with her. Pete no longer is reduced to a hissing, name-calling, snarling ball of fury; he has gotten within a foot of her without bursting a blood vessel, although he keeps a wary eye on her at all times.

This is Fletcher, in his box. He claimed this box as his own when we brought it
home from Sam's Club when he was about a year old. It has been sitting
in our entry hall ever since. It is his and his only. He trained Pete to stay
the hell out of it, and he will have Ruby trained, too. Maybe.

7. She is very chatty.

8. SHE'S SO FLUFFY!

9. She is endlessly amused by chasing her own tail.

Yep, still following you.

10.  Because she is asleep on my hand, I am willing to type this entire post with one hand, as it's best to let sleeping bundles of energy sleep undisturbed as long as possible.

Let's hear it, everybody, "Awwwww!"

And an unofficial #11 (because I am a rule follower and can't make it official, as this is TEN Things of Thankful):

I am thankful for my AWESOME "WAKEFIELD DOCTRINE" T-SHIRT that arrived this week.

And it's PINK!

You know that 30 Days of Thankfulness that folks are doing on Facebook? Skip that, do this. It's much more fun!

  1. kittens seem to share with puppies (and many adult dogs) a cuteness quality that should be scary, as opposed to endearing (sufficient to cause a person to type one-handed!).
glad the docTee arrived…trust you have found the comforting explanation for friends and family, "well, no. it's not a *Doctrine* Doctrine… everyone is quite nice and down-to…well they are all very polite mostly… really.

    1. It really is scary just how cute they are. And how I'm willing to sit here, needing to go the bathroom so badly that I fear standing up, because she is asleep on my lap and I don't want to disturb her....

    1. DAMMIT! So close, Zoe!

That cardboard box, I neglected to mention, is 8 years old. Been sitting in my entry hall for EIGHT YEARS. Every visitor to our house sees it first thing.

    1. I had a migraine when I took that picture and posted it. Never got a good look at myself until the headache subsided on Monday. The shirt looks pretty good....

    1. You need to do a little shopping over at Clark's emporium!

I'm beginning to think the name may be sweeter than the kitten. She's getting very feisty!

  5. Pink *sigh*

BUT is that a blanket with SPACE on it? Way cool :D

And you have a Youtube channel too (even though it's just for video of cat for the moment)

[Insert nice comment about cats here] *sneezes*

You know how, once you've taught children, nearly every name has an association and you think "Oh no, not THAT name, because THIS child..."

    Yeah. Ruby...

    1. In one of the pictures, I am wearing a chambray shirt with little tiny stars on it. In one, I am wearing my pjs. Never noticed a space theme!

SHE IS ADORABLE AND YOU KNOW IT.

Am I awesome or what? I have a Youtube channel!

By the time we discounted previous pets, children we can't stand, and previous girlfriends, we were running out of choices.

  6. I am not a cat person, but apparently I am a kitten person. At least a person who likes kittens that look like Ruby. She is absolutely adorable! I wouldn't be able to do anything but hold her.

    1. She really doesn't sleep ALL the time, but it's the only time she holds still long enough for a picture.

If you're a kitten person, then you have potential :)

  10. Well, Ruby is a cute name. And a cute kitten. NOT as cute as Indy (insert big LOL right here because that is just hi-larious), but I suppose you should keep her.

I can totally see why you're not getting anything done. Thanks for sharing all those sweet pictures! :)

    1. Ruby would have Indy for lunch. She thinks she's pretty tough.

She's definitely a good excuse for wasting an inordinate amount of time.

  13. very cute feline… (dog person lol but in puppies in kittens is a remarkable quality to get people to say awww).
excellent docTee! when the next run is done, will be happy to swap your clark for the appropriate designation… as to explaining the curious what kind of 'Doctrine' you are promoting… well, we'll be happy to answer their questions lol

    2. I will take partial blame in your dorkination, because I was slow to approve posts, thanks to a migraine. But only partial blame!

  14. You look fabulous in your Doc Tee Dyanne! I like the name Ruby and there's so many fun variations that immediately come to mind! If you're into multiple names for the non humans of the house that is:)
She's adorable. Love her markings, especially around her face. Couldn't help notice her paws -they look huge. She might be tossing Fletcher out of his box one day lol
I bet they'll come a day when you can write while she sleeps on your hand. I had a cat once who did just that. Sunday mornings while I wrote in my journal Madeline would be hanging over my right arm. She never budged. Until I was finished writing:)

    1. Why, thank you! I had just been hit with a migraine, but wanted to get the picture taken and into the post, so I went with it, sight unseen, more or less.

Ruby's front feet ARE a little big! I even counted her toes when I first got her, just making sure she didn't have an extra one. Hopefully, she wont' grow into them, although foot size isn't always a true indicator, as Pete has itty bitty feet and weighs 25 pounds (think bowling ball perched on knitting needles).

I type one-handed rather like someone would who is noodling around on a piano with one hand. Only not that good.

    1. One of the beauties of having cats is that they use a litter box with really no training at all. I just showed it to her, and she obligingly got in and did her thing.

  20. ADORABLE! I had to keep repositioning my computer so my 3 yr old didn't see this cute kitten! My husband's allergic. Otherwise, I would be looking for one RIGHT NOW :)

    1. My husband claimed he was allergic when I met him. I told him he had to get over it or get allergy shots, because I would always own a cat. He got over it.

  21. Awwww Ruby is adorable! It would be so awesome to have another kitten (my neighbors just went to look at some Friday too and I was jealous), but I swear Crooks would eat it. I'm surprised that your other cats haven't done so yet. It's great to hear they are beginning to warm up to Ruby.

Fletcher is serious about that box :) Did he claw up the sides? Crooks destroys boxes, I am very impressed that Fletcher hasn't utterly destroyed that and kept it relatively in tact for so long!

Uh oh! Doctrine tee shirt! Look out... You should totally go display it at some local historical location for a future post!

    1. Pete abhors Ruby. But I see some signs of weakening.

Yes, Fletcher has destroyed the box by himself. And you must bear in mind he did it without front claws. We hadn't had him very long when he took a paper box that was in the dining room (one that a case of printer paper comes in) and chewed it all the way around the top. The entire perimeter. He would pull off a little piece, then - patooey - spit it out, until he made it all the way around. It took him a couple of weeks to complete, then he never took another bite out of it again

If only there were historical locations near me, Jak!
