Quit Whining About It Being Dark Early And Just Be Thankful

I'm going to say something really unpopular here, but I actually LIKE it when Daylight Savings Time ends and we go back on Standard Time. I hate, hate, HAAAAATE getting up in the morning when it's still dark (so much so that I DON'T get up and am frequently late to work the last few weeks in October). Winter's coming, like it or not (not), and I think the house feels cozier somehow when it gets dark in the early evening. Kind of a hibernation thing, I guess. Plus, the combination of lamp light and taking my contacts out after supper makes the house, which is decorated with fall leaves and flowers and pumpkins, look particularly lovely! What could be more conducive to writing Ten Things of Thankful?

1. Let's start out that the Kansas City Royals won the World Series! I'm a Kansas City girl, born and raised there, so this was really exciting. Forever Royal!

2. There was no school on Monday (we follow the public school calendar, and they had a teacher professional development day). And following a 12 inning World Series finale that didn't end until nearly midnight, it was especially appreciated that I had the day off!

3. I was productive on that day off, too. Cleaned out my closet. Put away summer clothes and got out winter ones. Realized I am missing a pair of boots. Added "new pair of boots" to my shopping list....

4. My mom had her pacemaker replaced on Tuesday. The surgery went well, and she should be good for another 50,000 miles.

5. Because of Monday's scheduled day off and my mom's surgery on Tuesday, I only had a three day work week. That was kind of nice, although I miss my kiddos when I'm not there with them.

6. Cute bulletin board, courtesy of my Primary class:

7. A front came through on Thursday afternoon, bringing a small thunderstorm followed by much cooler weather. Ruby and I took the opportunity to nap together.

8. Hat Day in Pre-K. I got a little more mileage out of my $10 hat from Marian Days.

9. The creative play of preschoolers is a wondrous thing. There were three 4 year old boys in the Home Living Center during center time today. They cooked, they fed babies, they put on dress up clothes, the usual stuff.  But then I heard one of them making the sound of an emergency siren and saw that they had taken all the chairs in the center and made themselves a car. I'm still not sure of the exact type of emergency vehicle they were riding in, but the driver was in the front right seat, and they stopped periodically, took utensils from the play kitchen, and did some mechanical work under their seats before sitting back down and speeding away to disasters unknown.

Granny Clampett appears to be riding in the back.

10. My College Boy is home for the weekend for the first time since the mid-September. I've seen him several times, and we all went to the lake house together at least twice, but he hasn't been HOME. Naturally, he's off with friends for the evening, but he'll be home before long, and I'll be able to sleep knowing both of my little chicks are snug in the nest.

Be snug! Be warm! Write your thankfuls and link up with us right here.

    1. I got the hat at a Vietnamese Catholic celebration that is held near here every summer. I thought it was only $4 when I bought it, found out it was $10, which was more than I wanted to spend, but it felt awkward to back out of the transaction at that point, so now I own the hat!
Wow, you have to go all the way to the UK to see your college boy! I am very spoiled that mine is only a little over an hour's drive from here!

  2. I love the preschool play story. Preschool is the only place in the world where a chair can be a car, a pirate ship, a tree, a bed, limited only by imagination. It is in the 70s and humid here in NJ. Very unusual weather for November. I'll take the warmth, but I hate the dark.

    1. Those boys were so cute! I loved the way they would all jump up, pick up a play spoon or fork or knife, and work on the mysterious problem underneath their seats! Your cold front is on its way! We got it yesterday morning.

    2. It will be dark morning AND night in a few weeks, but not for long. I can handle it. Mostly.
And thanks! Glad she's ticking away. Now to get the COPD meds covered, and she'll be good as new.

  4. ok… so it's inevitable that is gets dark and cold, I can (grudgingly) accept that, but that's not my question. My question is, how did you manage to lose a pair of boots? Shoes. ok, they're smaller and such, but boots?

    1. I DON'T KNOW! How, indeed? They were short boots, black, and nowhere to be found. I cleaned out my closet completely, and I put my shoes in my closet 98% of the time. I am not one to leave them lying around (one of my few virtues). No one else wears the same size as me in the house. WHERE ARE MY DAMN BOOTS?!

  5. I'm SO GLAD your mum's surgery went well and that she's recovering well.

And you're right - more darkness will ALWAYS be an unpopular thing with me. Light and bright and sunshine and warmth. THAT'S what I want ;)

    1. She did really well with the surgery. She fell last week, though, and is in a world of hurt from that.
I like cozy evenings when it's dark early and I don't have to go anywhere. I'll be done with it all by January 2 and ready for spring :)

    1. Those boys were so cute! I had to be sneaky about taking their picture, because I didn't want them to stop what they were doing. The College Boy has been with friends more than he's been with us, but at least he's here!

  7. I am of those who like the change of time. I leave at 6:30 a.m. for work and it's already bright out!

  8. I'm like you and more than happy to see daylight before 8 am again, even if the early sunsets make the evenings feel short. I'm having dinner with my mother tonight - I'm sure she'll grumble at least once about it being dark early...

    1. How can anyone be expected to get up and go to work when it's still pitch dark at 7 a.m.? Bring on standard time!

  9. If it has to be dark early, at least it's during the winter. It is cozier when it's dark outside, for sure. Imagine how sad it would be if it was dark at 5:00 during the summer!
Preschool imaginative play is the bomb.
    Congrats to your KC Royals!
Way to be so productive on your day off! I haven't been productive at all this week.

    1. I LOVE daylight savings time when it starts in the spring! I'm just very ready for it to be over about mid-October, when it's too dark to get up.
Those boys were so stinkin' cute!
      Forever Royal!
If only I had found my missing boots (that I didn't know were missing until I cleaned the closet).

  10. I am with you all the way. I like darkness sometimes and the dark of winter.
Love that creative play of your kids too. It's a wonder to watch little children play the games they think of in their heads. You just never know what you're going to get. Did I hear that your kids drive on the left?
    :-)

    1. Winter is supposed to be dark, so we can be cozy inside in the warm glow of lamps.
Those boys were adorable! One of the boys asked if he could have a turn driving, so they switched chairs!

  11. There is something cozy about the dark evening hours. Hope you mom's recovery goes well. Ruby is so cute! I think it would have been hard to bring play time to an end--what creative students you have!

  12. I love the creativity of little kids. We got Leo a Duplo vehicle set, and he couldn't care less about the pictures that show cars you can make. He'll make his own, thankyouverymuch. And it makes wonderful sounds as it drives.

  13. Great photos! I miss seeing the creative of preschoolers in a nursery school setting. That's funny about your hat purchasing. Glad things went well for your Mom!
