Little Thankfuls Mean A Lot

Life isn't exactly bleak, but it could be better. I still have my stupid cold (day 13). Money is tight. My mom isn't very well. But if I were to dwell on the negative, I'd never see the many, many thankfuls I have in my life, including these:

1. The smell of turkey roasting in the oven.

2. Little indulgences like home made cream puffs.

Oh, my, these turned out well.

3. Friends who live far away and therefore aren't annoyed by my nose blowing and coughing and MAYYYYBE a little whining brought on by the endless cold and instead check to see if I'm feeling better (I'm not). (cough cough Kristi cough cough)

4. Two day work weeks. Okay, one of those days, I have to dress like an Indian and the other like a Pilgrim, but still. TWO DAYS.

5. The heater is fixed in my car! It was not a cheap fix, as the motor that makes it work had to be replaced, and THAT required pulling the radio out of the dashboard to get to it, but I HAVE HEAT.

6. The neighbor's dog has barked unceasingly for about an hour and a half now. I did not know that was possible, so I guess I learned something new today.

7. A brand, new toothbrush.

8. Quiet time with a sleepy kitty.

The liiiight's in my eyyyyyes.

9. Bath & Body Works had Wallflowers on sale today for $2.75 each (they are air fresheners that plug into a wall outlet, in case you didn't know, and I wanted to put some in my parents' house for them). That's a deal and worthy of its own thankful, but it gets better. I forgot my coupon, which is not exactly uncommon for me, although I would like to take this moment to say not only did I not lose my grocery/errand list today (which I usually do before I even get to the first store), I got everything on the list. Anyway, when the girl at the register asked me if I had any coupons, I mentioned that I did, but unfortunately it was still sitting on my kitchen counter where I left it, and she gave me the discount anyway. $10 off of a $30 purchase. Nice!

10. Spending the evening listening to talented high schoolers sing at a fundraiser for show choir.

With Antwon, a good friend of my daughter's
and my "other son". I'm going to miss
this face when he graduates in the spring.

Even when life is bad, it's still pretty good. I may have leaks in my roof, but I HAVE a roof. Not everyone is so lucky. Count your blessings. List your thankfuls.

  2. funny you should mention Cream Puffs; I Friday night James and I discussed of making cream puffs...he's my go to when I think we should make desserts.... yours look scrumptious!!!!!

hope you feel better soon; we have urgent cares around here like so many popped up in the last two years... anyway they all take our coverage ( i pay a co-pay of $ 25.00 ) and I have gotten z packs from them because of a lingering colds...perhaps you need more than over the counter medications.... maybe you have them by you...and if you don't come visit I'll take to one near my house :)

i feel your pain I have a very old car/SUV and the anxiety is unbearable when she goes into the shop - and lets not speak of passing inspection so i get when you say money is tight ...oh vey!

at least you have heat, but more importantly it's perfect timing!!!!

Your mom is in my prayers...hate it when the parents get sick especially when they are stubborn about it and tell their children no i'm fine, (that's my mom) ....

    Have wonderful Thanksgiving...

    1. I haven't made cream puffs in over 10 years. They were so good, and I found a new recipe on Pinterest for the filling that was fantastic.
I may have had a bit of a sinus infection, but that seems to be improving. Our co-pay is $45 (crappy insurance), so I need to be REALLY sick before I pay that! I already have to make two co-pays every month when I go to the oncologist (one for the doctor visit, one for the infusion center).
We have a 2001 Ford Windstar that has gotten its second wind and a 2004 Toyota Avalon (hand-me-down from my parents) that emits a cloud of blue smoke when it's started. They are both conversation pieces!
Thank you for the prayers. It's hard to see a parent failing like that. She seemed better today than she did a week ago, so maybe she'll be like my Windstar and get HER second wind soon.

  4. Hope you are feeling better as the week goes on. Thanksgiving Feast day at the Preschool is always fun. Finding thankfuls from lemons is always inspiring. Happy Thanksgiving.

    1. I'm finally seeing some improvement, but my son came home from college with a whopper of a cold, and I fear I'll catch that from him. Hoping not. Happy Thanksgiving, Val!

  6. I can assure you dogs can bark unceasingly all day long, which leaves me wondering why the owners even have dogs. Being able to close the windows and mute them a bit is the only benefit to heating season.

I hope you get over your cold soon!

    1. I swear that dog never took a breath. It's not like it's the first time he's barked, but it's the first time I noticed the duration, since I didn't have the tv or radio or anything on. It's awful in nice weather when we want to sleep with the window open.

  7. I hope you're feeling better, soon! A few years ago, I had a head cold solid from October until March, so I feel with you!! The cream-puffs still look awesome! And yay for heat in the car!!! Enjoy your nap with the kitty!

    1. Ohhh, I hope I don't have a cold as long as you did! That's awful! The cream puffs were so yummy, and I ate way too many of them. And yes, HEAT. I can do without air conditioning easier, but I'd rather not do that, either.

  8. Praying for your mom's recovery. So sorry to hear things are not going too well.
And your cold -ugh! I am also on week 2 of a cold I've named "Snotty Second Graders" because I love that you name yours. You need my famous sick tea and my new soup which I've decided I will call my sick soup. Honestly - both amazing remedies and they keep me from wanting to bite puppies and small children. Oh, and eat cream puffs - I hear those are good for a cold, too!
Naps with kitties are the best.
Car repairs...ugh. We had to get my tires replaced late summer and then the other day a broken door handle led to fixing that, getting inspected, and finding out we needed front and rear brake work. I could cry. Thank goodness for my mom who came to the rescue with her checkbook.
Hope you feel better soon. I miss you. I feel like I have not connected with my favorite people nearly enough the last few weeks with all the crap going on.
OH! And if you come to my blog and comment and you think it's lost, email me or message me - I have a new-ish spam plug in and I'm afraid it will eat your comments and never show me!

    1. My mom acted much better today when I saw her, as compared to a week ago. I'm hoping she'll improve steadily, if slowly.
The custodian at preschool came down with a cold on Thursday and named it "Dyanne!" You need to publish your recipes for sick tea and sick soup again.
We have had one car then the other to the garage every month since about July.Ugh!
I'm hoping for snow days and less to do after the first of the year. I miss talking to you, too!
Oh, boy, a new way for Wordpress to hate me!!! :)

    1. My dad eats oranges when he has a cold, but I like your idea of eating cream puffs much better! Fortunately, my husband finished them off tonight, so they'll no longer be around to tempt me. I think I know why I only make them every ten years or so!
Ruby said to tell you thank you for the compliment :)

  10. Same Antwon! He's a sweetheart. I think he and Emma will always be friends.
As long as my cold isn't replaced by the one Kyle brought home from college - yikes!
After all my bragging about the discount I got on the Wallflowers, I forgot to take them to my mom today. So mad at myself!

  11. What a great list you've assembled this week.
I love a new tooth brush too.
    :-)
My TToT included something from Bath & Body Works also.
A cold sucks. Nice to know there are people willing to give us a break sometimes, when we're feeling not quite our best. A kindness, at the store for example, goes a long way.

  12. I hope your cold is gone now, but I am more concerned about your Maxine look-a-like. I'll be praying for your mom.
YOU HAVE HEAT!!! Just in the nick of time. So glad to hear it.
    The cream puffs look fantastic.
I pray your Thanksgiving is full of good health and lots of fun with your family.

      I HAVE HEAT!
I wish I could send you a cream puff or twelve. Way too good to eat all of them myself.
Hope your Thanksgiving is going as well as possible :)

  13. Was today Pilgrim day, or Indian day? Either way, I hope your cold is gone by now, and that you won't catch one named Kyle. I also hope that your mom gets better soon.

The dog barking is worse when the weather is nice enough to have the windows open.

  15. An Indian and a Pilgrim with a cold traveling in a car with no heat! Brrr! Maybe now that you have a heater in your car that is working again, you'll be able to get rid of your cold. Those cream puffs look wonderfully delicious. I haven't made those in years. Listening to talented young people sing always lifts my spirit. It seems like so many young people are so incredibly gifted these days. Hope your Mom gets better too.

    1. Apparently, there was no anti-freeze, either, so that's been fixed, too. Whew! Cream puffs really aren't hard to make, so I don't know why I don't make them more often. Oh, wait, it's because I eat all of them when I make them!

  17. Cream puffs....one of my favorites, as well as cream or custard filled cupcakes. I can relate to the dog barking...use to have a neighbor that left his dog out all night while he visited overnight at relative or friends house. The dog barked all night! Can not for the life of me understand What he was barking at!
