Short Week and Long Thankfuls

Oh, four day work week, why did you seem so looooong? Maybe because last weekend's much needed R&R time at my parents' lake house went by too fast? The good news is the faster the weekend, the sooner the next edition of Ten Things of Thankful. My thankful week:

1. My daughter had her first show choir competition last Saturday, and her choir, comprised of 9th and 10th grade boys and girls, got first place in their division. I didn't get any pictures, because I was using my iPhone as a videorecorder. From the back of the auditorium. With bad stage lighting. But the audio isn't too bad. Considering it's taken from my iPhone. From the back of the auditorium. It's a long clip, and I don't expect anyone to watch the whole thing, but if you're so inclined, listen to a minute or two. (Caveat: the first soloist was a last minute pinch hitter when the regular soloist fell and broke his elbow a couple of hours before the performance and had to go to the hospital.)

2. Sunday morning, I was reading the TToT entry by Joy @ I Can Say Mama, and she listed as #4 the custard filled doughnut called a Berliner that she was enjoying at that very moment. Well, I couldn't think of anything else after that, so I finally gave in to the craving and went to Krispy Kreme and bought doughnuts for everyone, and two, TWO chocolate iced, custard filled doughnuts for just moi. Ahhhh! I needed that, Joy!

No make-up, hair thrown into ponytail.
This is the face of doughnut desperation.

3. As thankful as I was for those doughnuts, I'm EXTREMELY thankful there is no Krispy Kreme where I live. That would be baaaaad.

4. On my way home from Krispy Kreme, I passed what at first glance, I thought was supposed to be Sponge Bob Squarepants, but upon closer inspection, turned out to be a giant walking doughnut advertising another doughnut shop. I was so amused, I drove around the block and passed it again, just so I could get a picture.

5. My mother's choice of lunch on Sunday was worthy of a giggle. Or two.

Cheese spread, crackers, and
a ginormous marshmallow

6. Ruby had a delightful time at the lake house, and although she was more than a little rotten, my parents, especially my mom, enjoyed having her there. And that's even with Ruby drinking out my mom and dad's water glasses every chance she got, strolling across the kitchen table several times (that we know of), mooching food, climbing in the refrigerator, knocking my dad's little stash of cough drops off the end table, one by one, and scattering them all over the living room, falling off said end table, taking everything on it with her as she went down, and getting stuck in a glue board that was under the love seat.

Licking the ice cubes in my
mom's glass of Pepsi

My dad defending his glass of
water and his sandwich.

It's completely exhausting to
get in so much trouble.

7. On Monday, my daughter and I went to American Eagle to exchange a pair of jeans. She found several tops on the clearance rack she wanted to try on as well. The salesclerk (is that what you call them?) let her into a dressing room, and I sat on a chair, feeling very much like a mom, when my daughter came out to model for me and...let the dressing room door shut behind her. The look of panic on her face was priceless, but she wouldn't let me go get the saleclerk to let her back in, opting instead to crawl under the door. I'm grateful for the good laugh it gave me and only wish she hadn't outsmarted me (and my camera) by backing into the room instead of crawling back in head first.

How to re-gain ingress to a dressing room
one has locked herself out of.

8. So thankful to have the lake house to go to. Over the past 25 years that my parents have owned it, I have gone there to lick my wounds a number of times. It's also a place to spend time with family, relax, and recover from whatever ails you, mental or physical.

Ruby watching geese in the yard.

9. Oncology appointment this week, and so far, so good. I love this door in the lab area of the office and finally thought to take a picture of it. Anybody else see saggy boobies?

If you don't see boobs here, we have
nothing left to talk about.

10. I baked the best damn loaf of bread I've ever made on Wednesday. We ate half of that bad boy that night, hot from the oven and slathered with butter, along with some pretty amazing lentil soup, if I do say so myself. Comfort food for a cold night!

Tasted even better than it looked.

The Polar Vortex is rearing its ugly head again and howling around my house. Yours, too? Stay in and stay warm and link up with us at TToT.

  1. Am I first here??? Insomnia is a beautiful thing.

I scoff at your four day work week...we had a TWO day work week. Well, I guess three if you count the in-service on Monday. Or two if you count the in-service on Monday... ;)

I think the donut man has to be the best thing ever. And I love your daughter's dressing room re-entry plan. I am certain Kidzilla would do something like that rather than going the logical way - it's kind of her style.

Hooray for good oncology appointments and I most definitely see boobies. And now I'm laughing because I just typed boobies. Proof that my sense of humor has not progressed past twelve to fifteen year old boy.

That cat head in the water glass is funny and yet not - I'm pretty sure Cat Three drinks the glass of water I keep on the night stand at night. And yet I drink it. I am probably way too tolerant of these Cat Boys. Oh my gosh - she's drinking Pepsi???!!! Cat Three definitely does that - prefers Diet Coke, though. How silly are they?

Polar Vortex, yes, it's back. Don't miss Christine's Polar Vortex post - it's hysterical and it made me feel so much less bitter about the whole thing. Bitter...get it??

OK, it is clearly time for bed. Have a wonderful week!

    1. First comment, baby!
TWO DAY WORK WEEK? I'm calling unfair.
A SPRINKLE doughnut man. Or woman. Really hard to tell. And let's consider that Kidzilla is 5; my daughter is almost 15....
If I didn't have the sense of humor of a teenage boy, I wouldn't have posted about boobies on a door.
Our cats have been guilty of drinking out of my husband's glass in the night on more than one occasion. Ruby was obsessed with it and had no idea it was wrong. At least the boys do it under cover of darkness, knowing they don't want to get caught.

  2. Love that you went for Desperation Doughnuts.

And yep. I definitely see boobies. And like Lisa, I'm giggling about that. You reckon they bought that door on purpose?

Glad you have the lake house. Hope it's helped.

Also, congrats to your girl for a fab performance both onstage and in the changing rooms (that was a weird sentence to type...)

    1. The doughnut run was SO worth it.
Pretty sure the door thing was a fluke. It's a post-tornado, make a surviving building into an oncology clinic and attach a couple of trailers to it to give them enough room, kind of door.
The lake house always helps. Even in the dead of winter.
Okay, there's a changing room story that actually goes with the performance. The girls had to run off stage to change clothes and the venue was small, so they set up a tent OUTSIDE that they had to go to in order to change. Their clothes were laid out, but there was no light in there, so when my daughter got dressed, she accidentally put her tank top on backwards. Which wouldn't be such a big deal, except it had a racer back. It is fortunate that (a) she is not in the least bit busty and (b) the red jacket covered most of it.

  3. definitely a boobiesk door... All I can figure is that the people that make those hollow core doors must be sexually frustrated as all of our doors at work look like something out of a sexual anatomy book... they are either penises or vaginas ... they would match up with your boobs quite well.... try to be a woman working with sexual preditors and have a vagina on your door...I will take a photo and post them next week... you wont believe it...

I love your daughter.... she can sing and crawl like a lizard! I watched the whole thing... they were enchanting actually... I love the harmonizing of a live choir... they were great!

GOOD ONCOLOGY!? Can you actually use those words together in the English language? FABULOUS!

My mom eats a bit like yours... must be the manadatory diet for elderly woman across the country...she also drinks like your cat! GOD I love that Ruby... I think if she weren't here I would object...just sayin'.

and lastly but not least.... ahhhhhhh homemade bread.... the best... like better than door with genitals on them even....

    1. Here's the weird thing about the door; it's NOT hollow core. It's solid AND the boobies are on the other side as well.... DO take pictures of the vajayjay door in your office!
YOU WATCHED THE WHOLE THING? Wow, you certainly took one for the team! Thanks! They harmonize very well together. And they're a good bunch of kids.
"Good oncology" is certainly an oxymoron. But in this case, I'll take it!
My mom shared the cheese with Ruby, who has a thing for cheese.
If I could send you a loaf of that bread, I would. A.Maz.Ing.

  4. Polar vortex is here too yet again, but man those donuts have me wishing that Krispy Creme didn't close up near us now! Looked like a fabulous week. So happy for a good oncology visit and now just wishing you a great weekend Dyanne!! :)

    1. I thought the Polar Vortex was a once in 20 years thing, and that sonofabitch came BACK two weeks later. What up wit dat? And while we don't have a Krispy Kreme here, we have a local place called Super Donuts that I think is even better. It is clear on the other side of town (a big 4 miles away!), so I don't get them very often.

THAT ONCOLOGY DOOR THOUGH! That is hysterical! I saw the picture out of the corner of my eye and that is the FIRST thing I saw. Too funny.
My sister has a lake house, we usually go over the summer but this winter with it's bitter Polar Punch has us suffering from cabin fever, and we made a winter trip! SO glad we did. In my TToT post, I said we're about 2 weeks away from cabin fever level: The Shining!
We're keeping warm, but we're all getting sick of our tiny, comfy house! Can't wait for at LEAST temps in the 40s, I'll take that at this point.
    Great post!

    1. It was such a good doughnut....
Now I KNOW we can be friends if you saw the boobies at first glance!
We didn't get snow with this go-around of the P.V., so the only thing keeping us at home is the feeling that the wind is going to saw you in half when you're outside. We had two blizzards less than a week apart three winters ago that kept us housebound for two full weeks. Your The Shining analogy is not lost on me!

  7. Wow...your daughter's show choir was very impressive!! Good on them!

Ummmm.....so fess up...did you lick all the chocolate icing off that doughnut or did you scarf it down before you remembered to take a pic?!?!? ;P

Ruby is toooo cute and what good sports your parents are.

When I first glanced at that door I thought are those saggy boobs painted on a door!?! Yay to good news!!!

    1. Thank you! She is having SO MUCH FUN being in show choir!
      I totally scarfed it down.
My parents are VERY good sports. By the way, they are TOTAL enablers, as they keep feeding her scraps of what they're eating, so they kind of ask for it.
You saw the boobs! You saw the boobs! BFFs!

  9. The lake house looks like a wonderful retreat--and it looks like Ruby had a great time, too!

Someone had a sense of humor when they chose that door. I bet no one ever says anything about it at the office, though. The proverbial elephant in the room.

Congrats to your daughter for her choir performance. The clip I listened to sounded great!

    1. Ruby had a GREAT time, with the exception of getting caught in the glue board.
I very blatantly took a picture of the door in front of the nurse. She probably thought I was crazy.
Thanks for listening! I was very impressed with how well they sounded, and even more so with how well the sound was just with my phone doing the recording.

  10. I hear lake house and I have to admit, I'm jealous :-) Glad you had such a great time! Congrats to your daughter on making first place in the competition, that's awesome!!

I made some lentil soup tonight, because I'Ve been craving it but all the canned soup is with bacon. Used the opportunity to cook an extra erving of home-made veggie stock.

Those are totally saggy boobs on the door. Did they do that on purpose?? Funny either way!

    Have a great weekend, Dyanne!

Lentil soup is so easy to make AND good for you. And really good with fresh, homemade bread! I do use chicken stock in mine, but that's the only meat in it.
Good to know you are a Saggy Boob Seer, too!
      Have a great weekend, Stephanie!

I saw the post about the Berliner and I never wanted anything so badly in my life!! Now it's worse because you not only posted about it, you brought pictures. Thanks..really. :)
It's great that you have the lake house to get away to. Looks like little troublemaker Ruby likes it as well. She is too cute!
What a priceless moment with your daughter at American Eagle! I would have gotten a good laugh at that myself!

    1. Aw, thanks for listening! They really are pretty good, and their director did most of the vocal arranging.
Joy and that Berliner! Now it's become an epidemic. I think I'll call them Berliners from now on and sound worldly and sophisticated at the Krispy Kreme counter.....
I wish I had a picture of my daughter's face when she realized what the slamming of the dressing room door behind her meant. I sat there in my old mom chair and laughed and laughed.
You may be right about that bread.

  12. I looooove Krispy Kreme. Way too much. My favorite is chocolate glazed Kreme filled; instead of custard it's a fluffy whipped concoction. Too good.
The crackers & cheese spread look great, the marshmallow? Not so much. lol I used to have bowls just like that!
    I love the kitty pics.
There are DEFINITELY boobs on that door; they need to relocate it to the plastic surgeon's office!
And your bread looks wonderful! Yum!

I am not a fan of marshmallows, although I do love Little Peeps at Easter. Maybe because they are encrusted with sugar crystals?

  14. It was absolutely impossible to read this post and not smile! Ruby's antics match Toby's completely, imagine what havoc they could wreak together! I attempted to make peanut butter toast this morning and removed Toby from the island five times, with him returning like a speed demon to continue his attack on my toast! No is not yet in his vocabulary, but it's appearing more frequently in mine! :-) Such a lovely place you have to get away and relax, so good for the soul!

Daughter's concert was wonderfully done, proud mama moment for sure! Had to laugh at her cleverly backing under the door to prevent your planned rear-end angle shot which was sure to be threatened as Facebook fodder in the future! :-)

So very thankful for your good oncology report, best item on the list by far! And yes, that wood grain design on the door looks uncomfortably familiar in my old age!

The bread has my mouth watering far more than over a yummy crème-filled donut. Nothing is better than bread still warm from the oven, with a decadent amount of butter... Go You!!

    1. I fear Toby and Ruby working in tandem would only aid the forces of evil rather than forces of good. They would teach each other all their naughty tricks. We keep a spray bottle of water in the kitchen and squirt her when she gets on the counter, and she could care less. Hopefully, both of them will mature and mellow before too long.

My daughter is so onto me that she was several steps ahead of me when she started backing under the door. I barely got the picture I took! The show choir performance was so good! Thank you! They have three more competitions, and I'm sure they will really rock it by the last one.

I'm a very dull oncology patient.

  15. Okay - I now have a bit more insight into your daughter's obsession with Pitch Perfect :)

Your lake house looks wonderful! I'd be very thankful for a place like that to go to when things get hectic. So lovely.

Your pictures generally just made me laugh - but especially the change room. My 4-year-old has recently decided she needs privacy in public washrooms and has locked herself in a few times. Let's just say I'd like to thank Weight Watchers, the gym, and the cleaning staff at various establisments for making her rescue possible ;)

    1. Ahh, yes, now you see why she's memorized Pitch Perfect!

The lake house is a fantastic retreat! And in warm weather, we can sit on the back porch and watch the activities on the lake. It's a very quiet lake, really, as it is cold water - no speed boats and water skiiers or those noisy Sea-doo things. Mostly fishermen and two big excursion boats that have dinner cruises and such.

Oh, dear, that means you have had to crawl under public restroom doors. Yuck! At least my daughter was in a store changing room. And (joke's on them) she wasn't even wearing her own clothes when she slid under that door!

  16. The ability to see the little funny things around you is marvelous. Thank you for remembering to take photos of all of it!

I love a show choir. I wish just one of my kids could carry a tune and be in one. Your daughter's choir did a great job.

The boob door is hilarious. Your daughter choosing to climb under the door instead of just going to get the clerk is so typical teen. Why do they do that? (Probably because they can. We parents aren't quite as limber, and getting under a door would really be video-worthy.)

    Keep smiling!

    1. My daughter saw this very group at the tender age of 5 and said "I want to do that someday!" And fast forward about 10 years, and she's doing it. When she sets her mind to something, she is usually pretty successful. It also helps that she has a lovely singing voice and is a dancer....

My post title should have been Doors and Doughnuts, since that's what I seemed to dwell upon. I've been wanting to photograph that boob door for months and months and finally did it.

  17. You cat is just so cute. I know I say this every week, but that photo of her with her paw over her face is just SO CUTE!

I'm fairly sure we don't have show choirs in UK schools, at not competing. So our knowledge of them is from Glee, and it's cool to see the real Glee!

And yes, totally a boob door!

Your stories about Ruby totally remind me our kitty Jackson when he was a kitten... oh, he was so ornery! Always kept us on our toes!

Ornery hardly covers Ruby. And she used to be so sweet! Hoping she will mellow a bit after she gets her kitty maker removed.

Well, 'ornery' hardly covered Jackson, but the only word I could come up with. He nearly got us kicked out of our apartment --meowing loudly at 4 am, knocking things over (on PURPOSE) and off the mantle. He finally did calm down as he matured. And you're right, taking her lady parts out might help.

When I see someone dressed in something like, say, a doughnut suit, I am grateful that I don't have to do that for a living. Being a preschool teacher, however, I do have to wear my share of stupid get-ups for school.

I don't care for the regular Krispy Kreme's that they hand you when you walk up to the counter. Too squishy and sweet. I like them to be room temperature and frosted with either chocolate or maple.

The first one kept drinking my bedside water at night so now she has her very own special glass next to mine. And the other one has a little ramekin of water in the other room where she likes to sleep. Both are upstairs. Their big bowl of water is downstairs next to their food. Spoilt deluxe! 25. I enjoy watching show choir performances although neither of my children participated in them. My son certainly had the talent but opted to focus on marching band only. I was impressed with the first couple minutes. Most of our local schools only have one high school show choir usually comprised of primarily juniors and seniors. An occasional freshman or sophomore male may also be included since males are harder to recruit.

The bread looks AMAZING! Do you share recipes?!

    1. We used to have one mixed group and one all girl group, and I believe you had to be at least a sophomore to be in them, but when the tornado destroyed our school and caused the district to have a 9/10 Center and an 11/12 Center, across town from each other, they made a mixed group for each school and an all-girl group for each school. The new high school is supposed to be completed by fall, and then they will go back to one of each group. And yes, it is hard to recruit boys sometimes, although my daughter managed to recruit a sophomore boy to join who is a football and baseball player, so maybe he'll make it look cool and get other boys to join....

I got the recipe from Pinterest, so I will put a link or something on here for the bread this week. I've had a lot of inquiries about that bread!

    1. You can thank Joy @ I Can Say Mama for planting that doughnut idea in your head; she's the reason I HAD to have one (or twelve).
I'm not sure if it was ingenuity that made my daughter crawl under the door or the potential mortification of having to be let in by the salesclerk.
I'm so glad I surround myself with immature people who also see boobs on the door.

  28. I totally see the boobs! hahaha! And that bread looks AMAZING. The kitty photos of Ruby literally made my day. AND I think it's absolutely awesome that you had to go out and get donuts after reading Joy's post - LOL. In fact, I giggled throughout this entire post. *sigh* I needed that. I love your sense of humor. (and I totally need a lakehouse!!!)

    1. You are right up there with Kristi (not K2,although she did, too) as being someone I KNEW would see the boobs on the door. Joy is to blame for the domino effect of everyone indulging in doughnuts this week. You can come visit me at the lake house. I'll bring Ruby.

Hell YES I see boobs!! They look a little like mine before my double mastectomy!! I suppose the blessing out of that mess was I got a new pair. ;)
