J is for Japanese Bagel Head

My friend Sarah Summerlin from Amycake and the Dude has been SO supportive of my A to Z Challenge that she has supplied me with not just one, but TWO Pinterest pins to face my challenge. Isn't she a darling?!

She wanted me to try this:

Oh, those wacky Japanese young people! What will they think of next?!

The "Bagel Head" look has been around for probably 15 years or so, according to an article in Huffington Post, and it's come to the forefront only because of a segment on National Geographic Channel's series "Taboo" in 2012.

According to everyone's favorite source, Wikipedia, the body modification procedure is only done by a very few in the Japanese underground scene, and most Japanese have never heard of it, much less seen anyone sporting the look (I'm going to guess that would include my sweet blog friend Romi at In The Way Everylasting, unless THAT'S the reason why I can't get her to post a picture of herself on her blog? Hmmmm). The "bagel" is created by injecting saline under the skin of the forehead, then pushing down in the center to create the bump. The saline then slowly absorbs into the body, and the bump disappears in 18-24 hours.

I may not be a teenager any more, or Japanese, but I think I can pull this look off.

NAILED IT! PINTEREST WIN, BABY!!!

    2. I drew the line at the pointy teeth, the shaved eyebrows and the wacky contact lenses. Did you see the National Geographic Channel documentary? You know, the hardest part of this challenge was getting the bagel to stay on my forehead!
