It's craft time!
A friend posted on Facebook the following gif on how to make a homemade teddy bear, and I thought it looked fun and easy, or I did the first time I watched it (don't worry, it's short):
The SECOND time I watched it, I realized it had been edited and included a trick in the editing that made it impossible to see one of the steps. However, that did NOT stop me from buying a couple of washcloths and a smallish towel from the dollar store so I could give it a try.
I watched the video and watched the video, but I couldn't quite catch what that trick move was, and all I could create was a wad of terrycloth that looked nothing like a bear.
On to Plan B. I Googled "how to make a teddy bear from rolled fabric" and found a video that got the same end product as the gif my friend posted, only it was an actual tutorial. The bad news was that it wasn't in English. I gave it my best shot. Here are the steps from the (non-English) video:
Roll one side of a wash cloth as tightly as you can to the center. Do the same with the other side. |
Twist the double roll of washcloth in the middle. |
Fold the right side over the left side so it looks like 4 uncooked brown 'n serve sausages.. |
Take the top, shorter sausages and move them to either side. |
Rubber band the top to make a head. |
Stick a finger in the top of the head and kind of fluff the fabric a bit so it's shaped more like a head. |
Pinch the top of a sausage to make an ear and secure it with a small, clear hair elastic. |
Now pinch an ear on the other side. You're not making a bust of Van Gogh. |
Check to see that your supervisor approves. |
Tie a ribbon around the neck and VOILA! You have a teddy bear of sorts. |
They are kind of cute.... |
If you're dying to make your own homemade teddy bear, all the materials you need are a washcloth (mine was 2/$1 at Dollar Tree), a rubberband, two small, clear hair elastics, and a piece of ribbon to make a bow. Impress someone who is easy to impress with your craftiness today!
That is so cute! I've made bunnies out of washcloths but didn't realize I could also make bears. I'd like to give this a try.
ReplyDeleteIt turned out way better than I thought it would, but it wouldn't have if I hadn't found that second video!
DeleteThat's pretty awesome. I wonder if it would work to make a larger one out of a towel?
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking a towel might be too bulky, unless you have old, cheap, slightly threadbare towels around the house like I do (maybe need to think about buying some new towels some day!). Try it and let me know!
DeleteVery cute! Both bears and cat. :) Cat is cutest.
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks! The cat is Finn and he was SOOOO helpful - hah! Good thing he's cute!
DeleteThat is really cute. If I could go to the dollar store and get some face clothes I'd make a couple for my two grandkids who just turned 1. Hopefully I'll be able to do it before they turn 5.

Oh, let's hope so! It really did turn out pretty cute!
DeleteA super cute, easy project at least once you find the right instructions. The supervisor does seem to approve too. Weekends In Maine
ReplyDeleteThe hardest part was keeping the supervisor out of the way!
DeleteMy question: has the "supervisor" ripped the cute little teddy bears to shreds yet? :D
ReplyDeleteThe supervisor has been less than interested in them. He only wanted to impede the production.
DeleteHaha, fun and quick teddies ;)) (or not so quick?)
ReplyDeleteH is for Hand Dyed Fabric
Once I figured it out, quick! Quicker without a cat helping!
Deleteoh my....your cat is gorgeous!!! (I'm NOT a cat person!) I may have to try to make a teddy bear for my newest grandson.
ReplyDeletedon't you hate when steps are hidden, invisible or not even there - or better yet -- step by step, following along with them, then they say = 'oh by the way, on the page 4 pages before you want to do this!!!??? LOL - -watched a few videos like that before - I've learned to read between the lines on them and listen for 'what's NOT there.

Yeah, that video was definitely smoke and mirrors, and I really didn't think it would work at all. I was pleasantly surprised!
DeleteFinn said to tell you thank you for the compliment! We also have his litter mate, a long haired tuxedo named Lewis, plus a calico named Nora Pearl. They all make appearances at one time or another on the blog!
