Today is my birthday.
2nd birthday |
And it would be a perfect day to write about getting old. If I planned on it happening, that is.
I WANT to get older, given that the alternative to getting older is dying. (Can't go backwards; no backsies, 'member?)
Photo bombed by the cat |
But get old? Not if I can help it.
Getting old is a state of mind, and giving in to it is giving up.
9th birthday |
So I will continue to run and slide across my hardwood floors in my sock feet. I will skip whenever my heart feels like it. I will sort my M&M's by color before I eat them. I will startle the cat just to watch him jump. I will sing with gusto in the car and throw in dance moves as necessary. I will eat cookie dough. I will Zumba like a boss. I will use the toothpicks from my sandwich like chopsticks and pick up pieces of lettuce from my plate (purely hypothetical, of course...). I will dance in the kitchen.
At 5, showing off my twist skills |
I shall grow older, but I shall not grow old.
And you can't make me.
So there.
Should be 53 candles. May be a little short, fire codes being what they are and all.... |
Happy birthday, Dyanne! You are not old by any stretch. And I still like to sort my M&M's before I eat them...no judging here! (I also don't like my food to touch other food on my plate, but that's a whole other issue that I'm not sure has to do with age...)
ReplyDeleteWhy, thank you! Let my food TOUCH? Hah! My family eats off of divided plates.
DeleteHappy Birthday... semi arch-nemesis... Hope you had a wonderful day...
ReplyDeleteNot that you are old now but when you ARE old you can still be totally bad-ass
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purpl
Good idea. I think I'll start practicing!
DeleteHappy birthday!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kristi!
DeleteI don't know about you but I wear purple and learned to spit a long time ago! happy birthday! And many many many many many many more!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I don't wear purple for fear of looking like Barney the Dinosaur.
DeleteLIZZI...you totally stole my idea thru ESP. This is getting weirder and weirder...
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!

ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Natalia!
DeleteHappy Birthday
ReplyDeleteHow great is it to add they years but not act old? I love it and it really does beat the alternative for now.
Stopping by nest week to see what you have to say again.

Thank you, Peggy! Some might call my refusal to grow old a lack of maturity....
DeleteOh how I love old photos! Such a cute thing you were. And now a gorgeous woman. Here's to many, many more years of fun and embracing life!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!
Oh, Christine, you are too, too kind! Thank you!
DeleteHAPPY BIRTHDAY DYANNE!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you:) Old is a state of mind!
Exactly!
DeleteIsn't this HILARIOUS? Had to publish both of them. How could I not?
ReplyDeleteNice share. I agree: aging can't be stopped, but we don't have to be "Old." I keep telling my husband that at 80 I'll be wearing gold loafers and red lipstick.
ReplyDeleteAt 80, I will still be skipping whenever I feel like it :)
DeleteHappy birthday! I'm right there with you, still as immature as ever. ;) Cheers!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Come on over, and we can slide across my bedroom floor in our sock feet.
Delete"I shall grow older, but I shall not grow old." I love that!
ReplyDeleteHope you had a great birthday!
Aw, thanks so much! And it was a GREAT birthday!
DeleteHappy late birthday! I love how you grow older without growing old.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'll fight it to the bitter end!
DeleteHappy B'day, Dyanne! You're definitely getting wiser!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Michelle! I don't know if I'm actually wiser or just street smart.
