I'm Thankful And It Isn't Even Thanksgiving!

My friend Christine @ A Fly On Our (Chicken Coop) Wall is the brand, spanking new co-host of a brand, spanking new link up, "10 Things of Thankful," the goal of which is to challenge us to find the joy in each day.  When we think about what we are thankful for, we are probably all guilty of looking mostly at the big picture: family, shelter, employment, food, health. But what about the little picture? What about the every day things that happen that, when you stop to list them, prove that life is pretty good? Here's my list of ten things that happened today* for which I can be thankful:

1. I am thankful that I'm not Rafael Nadal's wife mom housekeeper and have to wash these socks he wore to the French Open.

2. I'm thankful that I didn't backhand my 17 year old son when he went all know-it-all while packing for a one week mission trip to Colorado. And wasn't planning on taking more than one pair of jeans. And hadn't read the checklist of what to take for all the activities they would be doing (and, more importantly, what NOT to take). And wouldn't believe me when I referred to said checklist.

3. I am thankful that I made a trip to Walmart today and did not lose the car in the parking lot. This is an anomaly.

4. I am thankful that my husband agreed to get up with me at 5:30 (as in A.M.) every day this week to work out at the Y, and that he wants to go on Saturday as well. And that he admits I was right that, as trite as it sounds, it gets your metabolism going and gives you energy all day.

5. I am thankful that I am home during the summer and am able to take a nap during the day when that 5:30 workout hits me between the eyes and I can't hold them open any longer.

6. I'm thankful that my husband didn't seriously hurt himself when his socked feet slid out from under him while he was leaning against the sink this evening, eating homemade pizza (which was DELICIOUS - spinach, sauteed mushrooms and caramelized onions on whole wheat crust).

Ouchie.

Mmmmm.

7. I'm thankful that he didn't get mad at me when I laughed, even as I was checking to see if he was okay. (It's a family trait that we laugh when someone falls, which is completely inappropriate,  I KNOW.)

8. I am thankful my parents bought too many freshly picked green beans and new potatoes at the old order Mennonite settlement's produce stand and shared them with me. I have a ham bone in the deep freeze that I've been saving for an occasion such as this.

9. I am thankful that Teri Biebel @ Snarkfest and Jenn @ Something Clever 2.0 have both favorited comments I made on Twitter, because it makes me feel like I'm all that (and also implies I know what I'm doing on Twitter, which, sadly, I don't).

10. I'm thankful for my sweet friend Christine @ A Fly On Our (Chicken Coop) Wall because she (1) always encourages me, (2) was brave enough to do this link-up, (3) writes posts that always get to me on an emotional level, from raucous laughter to tender tugs at my heart, (4) draws the best pig/elephants I have ever seen.  (I could list about a hundred more, but I don't want her to get all big-headed about it.)

*Okay, I fudged a little. #9 actually happened over the course of about a week or so. So sue me.

    1. Thank you, Lana! The pizza was delish, although I could do without my husband falling down in the middle of it (he is banned from walking around the house in just socks now). I told him if something like this ever happened again and he died from it, I would tell people it was a bar fight and not that he slipped on the kitchen floor.

  3. The first thing I did AFTER seeing if he was going to live was to turn to my kids and demand why NEITHER of them captured it on video, since they were both in the kitchen and their cellphones were, of course, either in their hands or desperately close by.

    Christine is a jewel.

Thank you for co-hosting the blog hop!

    1. Meh, it's not so bad once your feet hit the floor. Not always easy swinging them over the edge of the mattress, though.

    1. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'll see if I can write the pizza recipe down so that it makes sense (I kind of wing it).

  9. I really had to laugh at no. 1! Yes, these are the small things in life we have go be thankful for! :-)) Thank you so much for linking up with us!

    1. Those socks! (Honestly? I'd probably chuck them in the trash can instead of trying to bleach that red clay out.)

  10. I think you son should be thankful. And my Allie, too, if she survives the next hour before she goes to bed!! It is so nice to meet another mom who admits to laughing when others fall down. I give points. For example, Hubs got a 7.4 for slipping on the deck last night.

    1. You're right, my son SHOULD be thankful! (He forgot his phone charger and his epi-pen and lost a contact already and it wasn't even noon yet.) And I give my husband a 9.75. He didn't stick the landing.

  11. Well, you just got me blushing. Thank you so much for your nice words. Just so you know, I wouldn't keep encouraging you if you weren't 1. Absolutely hysterical 2. tough as nails 3. kind and generous 4. the kind of person who laughs when others fall. My lands, I would have laughed so hard if my husband did that. That's one ugly mark, though. Ouch.
Question: Will your son actually use all of those clothes and things you made him pack? Every time my boys go to camp, I make them take a ton of stuff, none of which gets used.
I knew it was going to be a good list when you started out with the socks. A true mom you are. (And I would have thrown them out, too.)
Thank you for linking up and being so supportive of the hop. (and me!)

    1. Now I'm blushing right back at you! Thank you, my friend!

And after my son stomped around and slammed down (my side of it) or gently set down (his version) a bag that was going to be too small, I said, "I quit." Left him to his own devices. (Bear in mind that he didn't start packing until 9:00 at night and was leaving at 5:30 the next morning for a one week trip.) So far, I know he forgot his phone charger, extra set of contacts, and epi-pen (peanut allergy). He's needed two out of three of those; fortunately, the epi-pen wasn't one of them.

So I don't know if he packed too little or too much in the way of clothes. If I were in charge, I would have sent too much, because I'm a girl, and I never know when I might change my mind about what I want to wear.

Also, I think they bring back all those extra clothes from camp because they wear the same darn thing every day they are there.

  12. What a cool thankful list and I completely believe that over a week or so ago still counts. Thankful is thankful after all. So glad your husband was okay and that he understood your need to laugh at him.
And your son should thank you for not backhanding him. That one made me laugh. I'm thankful for the laugh.

    1. It was very tempting to pop him a good one. How old is too old to spank, anyway?

  14. Hmmm what I am getting from this is the hint that Christine likes spanking... and I've suspicion I know from which end of the spectrum! Muahahaha!

I thought it was great you picked up on some of the little things some may completely take for granted.

That bruised back looked horrid :( I hope he is okay, but we may be related... I have that default laugh setting when someone falls. Or just if something looked funny as it happened. Not necessarily a good thing, all depending.

    #10 (4) Damn right!

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you find a good handful this week to be thankful for!

Maybe Christine should start commissioning her elepig artwork?
